KIM + KALVIN

When Kim & Kalvin first got in touch with us to inquire about booking their wedding, we knew that we would be the perfect match for their wedding day.
An Irish couple who had braved the move across to Canada, getting in touch with a South African photographer to shoot their wedding, who was now living in Ireland but who was actually supposed to move to the city they now live in to take up a flying job, back in another life when he was a commercial pilot.
We couldn’t have written the story better ourselves.
From the outset, two things stood out about Kim & Kalvin:
1. their immense love for each other, &
2. the crazy calm way in which they dealt with anything wedding-related!
When I asked Kim what her most anticipated part of the day was, she stated, without any hesitation, that it was the first look. Seeing Kalvin, & having him see her, for the first time on their wedding day was the moment she couldn’t wait for, along with the special moments they got to spend together before
their ceremony begun. For Kalvin, it was having the opportunity to be around friends & family on the day that was among the most eagerly awaited elements of the day. Of course, getting to say “I do” to Kim was top of his list! They both agreed that seeing everyone together, happy & enjoying themselves, was their biggest take-away from their day.
Kim & Kalvin both offered some words of wisdom for couples who are looking to get married in the not-too-distant future: do what you want to do, & do not try to please everyone, as you will end up being the one (or couple) who’s the least happy with how your own wedding went, as well as to avoid, if possible, having your wedding in another country while trying to plan it all on your own.
Kim & Kalvin both agreed that nerves didn’t really feature on the day, & the only thing Kalvin was nervous about was his speech (which he absolutely aced, by the way!). Regardless of the fact that nerves barely featured, they both agreed that the day went so much smoother than they expected - a trait that I’m sure all couples hope for on their wedding day!
Their inspiration behind their wedding was a motto of “keep it simple”. Looking at how beautiful the day turned out, & how much they enjoyed it all, I would say it worked! They both agreed that adding extra, unnecessary things to your big day might only complicate things & bring on more, certainly unwanted, stress.
On the music side of things (who doesn’t love wedding day music?), Kim walked down the aisle to the piano version of one of Kalvin’s favourite Deadmau5 songs, Bleed. Their first dance song was a surprise for many, as House of Pain’s “Jump Around” probably doesn’t feature on the list of everyone’s idea of perfect first dance songs, but they absolutely rocked it! I’ll never forget Kalvin “trying to stop” the band from playing it! An Oscar-worthy performance indeed!
Their wedding was made more Kim & Kalvin-ish by the little quirks that only they could (so beautifully) pull off. Decks of playing cards & mini jengas at the drinks reception, Haribo rings in jars, doughnuts instead of a cake, DIY items made by family and friends, using songs that they love that aren’t classic wedding songs, & not doing a traditional first dance! Apparently they think they’re too awkward for a traditional first dance, but judging how they pulled off “Jump Around”, I’ll beg to differ!
When all was said & done, & their wedding day was largely behind them, Kim & Kalvin both agreed that they felt amazing, tired, loved & very thankful that everyone present on their day seemed to enjoy themselves as much as the married couple.
The thing they’re looking forward to the most about married life is settling back into a normal, everyday life & routine after all of the planning!
